Moving air vs. making cold air

Fans don't cool a room — they move air across your skin, which speeds up evaporative cooling and makes the same air temperature feel lower. A portable air conditioner actually removes heat from the room using a compressor, the same mechanism as a refrigerator. That's the entire reason the wattage gap is so large: a fan motor draws tens of watts, a compressor draws hundreds to over a thousand.

Both run on the same 8-hour default — overnight or a full occupied day — at the U.S. average rate:

Why a portable AC costs so much more than a certified room AC

The median certified window or room air conditioner costs $100.16 a year to run at the U.S. average rate. What actually moves the number

  • Device category. Fans vs. compressor-based cooling is a difference of one to two orders of magnitude — not a rounding error.
  • Hours per day. Eight hours approximates cooling through the hottest part of the day; run longer and every figure above scales linearly.
