How to Read the EnergyGuide Label

The yellow EnergyGuide tag on a new appliance shows a lab-measured kWh-per-year figure that’s consistent and comparable across brands — but the dollar estimate printed next to it assumes a single national average electricity price, not your actual rate, so it’s frequently wrong for any specific household by a wide margin.

The label and the ENERGY STAR logo are not the same program:

  • EnergyGuide is a mandatory yellow tag required by the FTC’s Appliance Labeling Rule on categories like refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers, water heaters, and room air conditioners.
  • ENERGY STAR is a voluntary EPA/DOE certification — a subset of models earn the blue ENERGY STAR logo for meeting an efficiency bar, and it’s ENERGY STAR’s certified kWh figures that power every model page on WattCost.
  • Not every category gets a tag. The FTC exempts clothes dryers, kitchen ranges and ovens, and countertop microwaves, on the reasoning that energy use doesn’t vary enough between models to make the comparison useful — which is also why WattCost’s own clothes-dryer figures come from ENERGY STAR’s certification data rather than a retail label.

What’s actually printed on the label

A standard EnergyGuide tag has five parts, in roughly this order:

  • Brand and model number — identifies the exact unit being rated.
  • Capacity — cubic feet for a refrigerator, gallons for a water heater, and so on.
  • Estimated yearly energy use (kWh) — the standardized DOE test result. This is the same number ENERGY STAR uses and the same one WattCost multiplies by your state’s rate.
  • A cost-range scale — a bar showing where this model’s estimated cost falls versus the least and most expensive similar models on the market.
  • Estimated yearly operating cost ($) — the kWh figure converted to dollars using a single assumed national electricity price set by regulation, updated only periodically.

Why the dollar figure on the tag isn’t your real bill

That last number is the one that misleads people, because it has to pick one electricity price for the entire country. U.S. residential electricity rates actually range from 12.35¢/kWh to 46.62¢/kWh depending on the state — a nearly 4x spread — so the same labeled appliance can cost dramatically more or less than the tag suggests depending on where it’s plugged in. How to actually use the label when shopping

Ignore the dollar figure and focus on two things: the kWh-per-year number, which is directly comparable across every model with a tag, and the comparison scale, which shows you where this model falls versus its size class. Then look up the model — or its category — on a site like WattCost to get the cost estimate priced at your own state’s electricity rate instead of the label’s national assumption.
