Which Appliance Is Actually Worth Replacing First? A Cost-Payback Framework

The framework: rank by what's actually on the table

For each category, WattCost already publishes the cheapest and priciest certified model's annual cost. Subtract one from the other and you get the maximum a household could be leaving on the table by owning the wrong model — not a prediction about any specific reader's appliance, but a measure of how much the category itself rewards checking.

Why dehumidifiers and room ACs lead the list

Both are seasonal, capacity-driven categories: pint or BTU rating varies enormously across the certified lineup, and an oversized or older-generation unit can use several times the electricity of a right-sized, efficient one for the same job. A refrigerator, by contrast, has a narrower job description — which is part of why its swing, while still large in relative terms (19.2x), tops out lower in absolute dollars.

A bigger swing doesn't mean your unit is the problem

A simple payback calculation

WattCost doesn't publish appliance purchase prices — that's not certified data, and prices vary by retailer and season. But the payback math only needs one number from here: take the annual dollar difference between your current model's tier and a most-efficient certified model in the same category (from the category or state cost-to-run pages), then divide a replacement's real purchase price by that figure. A $150-a-year swing with a $600 efficient replacement pays back in 4 years; a $30-a-year swing needs a much cheaper replacement, or a longer runway, to make sense on electricity cost alone.
