Run the median ENERGY STAR certified electric clothes dryer in North Dakota and it costs about $74.96 a year. Run the identical machine in Hawaii and it costs about $282.98 — a 3.8x difference driven entirely by the electricity rate, not the dryer itself.

Why dryers are so sensitive to where you live

Clothes dryers fall into what WattCost's methodology calls a cyclical duty class — the certified annual kWh figure assumes 283 drying cycles a year, the DOE test standard. Unlike an always-on refrigerator, a dryer's total energy use scales directly with how often you run it and how much electricity costs where you live, since the appliance itself does the same amount of work every cycle regardless of location.

That's why state electricity rates move the needle so much for this category specifically. The formula is simple — annual kWh × state rate ÷ 100 — but a rate that swings from 12.35¢/kWh in North Dakota to 46.62¢/kWh in Hawaii means the same physical machine produces wildly different bills.

The cheapest and priciest states to run a dryer

At the median certified dryer's energy use, here's what the same machine costs across a sample of states:

The machine still matters — a lot

State rate isn't the only lever. Certified electric dryers range from about 122 kWh a year (heat-pump models like the Bosch WQB245AXUC) up to 687 kWh a year for standard vented models — roughly a 5x spread on the appliance side alone. Heat-pump dryers dry clothes by recirculating and dehumidifying air rather than venting heated air outside, which uses substantially less energy per cycle. Stack both effects together and the range gets extreme: a heat-pump dryer in North Dakota can cost well under $30 a year to run, while a standard vented dryer in Hawaii can cost several hundred — for functionally the same job, drying clothes.

What this means if you're shopping

If you live in a high-rate state, the efficiency of the specific model you buy matters more, dollar for dollar, than it would in a cheap-electricity state — the same percentage efficiency gain is worth more money. Note also that only electric dryers appear in this data; a gas dryer's running cost is mostly gas, not electricity, so a kWh comparison wouldn't apply.
