Does ENERGY STAR "Most Efficient" Always Mean Cheapest to Run? What the Data Shows

ENERGY STAR's "Most Efficient" refrigerators average 349 kWh a year — slightly more than the 345 kWh category-wide median — which sounds like a contradiction until you know what the badge actually measures.

What "Most Efficient" actually certifies

For refrigerators, ENERGY STAR's 2025 Most Efficient recognition criteria require most standard-size models to be at least 27% more efficient than the federal minimum on a DOE-calculated adjusted-volume basis — a size-relative bar, not a fixed low-kWh cutoff. A large, efficient-for-its-size refrigerator can clear that bar while still using more absolute electricity than a small, merely-average one. Where the badge does mean lower usage
