Certified TVs in WattCost's dataset span 18.36 to 631.05 kWh a year — a 34x range across just 172 models — and screen size only explains part of it.
What ENERGY STAR actually certifies on a TV
A certified television must consume 0.5 watts or less in sleep mode, and its allowed on-mode power scales with screen area — a bigger panel is permitted to draw more power and still qualify, because a bigger backlight or larger OLED panel genuinely needs more energy to reach the same brightness. That means "certified" doesn't mean "low-power"; it means the TV meets an efficiency bar scaled to its own size.
The certified annual kWh figure assumes the ENERGY STAR duty cycle of about 5 hours of on-time a day plus standby the rest, so a household that streams more than that will use more than the certified number, and one that watches less will use less.
The feature that quietly saves the most energy
Many certified sets now include Automatic Brightness Control (ABC), which dims the backlight in a dark room and brightens it in a sunlit one — ENERGY STAR credits it with real energy savings, and most viewers never notice the adjustment because the eye adapts to ambient light anyway. Switching ABC off to lock in maximum brightness at all times is one of the most common ways an otherwise-certified TV ends up costing noticeably more in practice than its label implies.
Size explains a lot, but panel technology explains more
The most efficient certified TV in the dataset uses 18.36 kWh a year; the least efficient, a 115-inch Samsung Neo QLED, uses 631.05 kWh. Size is part of that story — compare the 43-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch facets and the trend is visible — but panel technology moves the number just as much within a single size class. Mini-LED and high-brightness panels draw meaningfully more power than a same-size standard LED panel to hit their peak brightness specs.
That duty cycle is a standardized comparison tool between models, not a personalized prediction: at the median 187.5 kWh a year, a household streaming closer to 8 hours a day instead of the certified 5-hour basis should expect a bill noticeably above the certified figure, while a household that mostly watches in the evening will land under it.
Your state changes the bill more than one size step does
At the US average rate, the median certified TV costs $35.31 a year. In North Dakota that's $23.16; in Hawaii it's $87.41. For most households, moving states changes the TV's running cost more than stepping up one screen size does.
What actually moves the number
