Winter vs. Summer: Which Appliance Costs Actually Change by Season?

Not every appliance's electric bill moves with the calendar. WattCost groups every certified category into a duty class — and that classification predicts almost exactly which costs swing hard by season, which shift gently, and which don't care what month it is at all.

Always-on: the appliance that doesn't care what month it is

A refrigerator's certified figure — a median of $64.96 a year — comes from a DOE test procedure that assumes continuous 24/7 operation at standardized temperatures, winter or summer alike. Freezers work the same way. There's no seasonal adjustment because the compressor cycles on its own schedule, not the thermostat's.

Seasonal: cooling costs concentrated in a few months

A room air conditioner's certified annual figure — a median of $100.16 — assumes 750 cooling hours a year, all of which land in the warm months. Run it outside that window and the cost approaches zero; the entire figure is concentrated into whatever stretch of summer you actually use it. Seasonal: heating costs concentrated in the opposite months

Space heaters sit at the opposite end of the calendar with no certification at all — resistive heating is already close to 100% efficient, so there's nothing for ENERGY STAR to certify. Run at a typical 1,500 W for 6 hours a day, a space heater costs about $1.69 a day, or $618.57 if run every day of the year — but almost nobody does that. Demand-driven: the appliance that shifts gently, not sharply

Electric water heaters are certified on a Uniform Energy Factor test that simulates a household's typical daily hot-water draw — not a seasonal one. Incoming water is colder in winter, which means more energy is needed to reach the same set temperature, a basic consequence of heating a larger temperature difference. That pushes winter water-heating costs up somewhat, but the DOE test basis doesn't split the figure by season, and WattCost isn't inventing a percentage it can't certify. Usage-driven: the ones that track your habits, not the weather

TVs, computer monitors, air purifiers, dishwashers, and clothes washers and dryers are all usage- or cycle-driven — their certified figures assume a fixed number of hours or cycles a year based on how people actually use them, not on outdoor temperature. A TV left on the same number of hours costs the same in January as in July.

What actually moves the number

  • Duty class, first. Always-on and demand-driven categories barely shift by season; seasonal categories concentrate almost their entire cost into a few months.
